INTRODUCCIÓN
En una propuesta
como esta, es fácil hacer un recorrido grafico
por Guayaquil, adentrándonos en lo que la ciudad
ya tiene de viejo y de nuevo; observando aquello que
esta arquitectónicamente mejorado, que se muestra
urbanísticamente equilibrado, que nos hace notar
un desarrollo progresivo en constante cambio y crecimiento,
en continuo hacer y rehacer. La diferencia en esta edición
es que sin contener todo de todo, y siendo una obra
cuya concepción es básicamente fotográfica,
no podrá ser considerada una “guía”
comercial ni turística: es una propuesta renovada
que pretende, sin importar su genero, ofrecer desde
un golpe de viste una buena parte de lo que hoy es la
ciudad.
En el repertorio fotográfico que aquí
se presenta, se ha tratado de ver a Guayaquil desde
la calle, a flor de piso, a nivel de suelo; como al
andar lo vemos todos sin excepción…. Hasta
donde alcanza la vista. En esto se pensó antes
de hacer algunas tomas fotográficas y también
durante la revisión general de todo el material
recopilado, que en su mayoría, como veremos,
es tomado desde donde esta el transeúnte, el
visitante, el que pasea, el que conoce y el que esta
reconociendo. Como es natural, también se incluyen
algunas tomas aéreas que resultan indispensables
en esta tarea.
Veamos a Guayaquil, la ciudad de Octubre, la que avanza,
la que prospera, y veámosla en su conjunto como
un todo coherente, incluyendo ciertos detalles típicos
de ventanas y balcones que a su manera desentonan pero
también entonan, quitan y ponen, dicen y desdicen,
lucen y deslucen, además de otras curiosidades.
Todo esto
en el plano visual del peatón común que
somos todos, Guayaquileños o no, pero siempre
en esta ciudad de independencia, siempre en el octubrino
Guayaquil que ajustándonos a la época
actual, continua resurgiendo con el apoyo de todos y
también gracias al rescate, refundación
y transformación realizadas por el alcalde León
Febres-Cordero Ribadeneyra y Jaime Nebot Saadi, quienes
le han dado una nueva cara a esta urbe, convirtiéndola
en una indiscutible ciudad de destino.
He querido
graficar ese resurgimiento y hacerlo conocer en estas
páginas, las de mi libro:

UNA
CIUDAD ABIERTA
Las ciudades son el espejo
de su gente; sus características mas intimas
se enlazan con su historia, sus costumbres, su modo
de comunicarse y en la original forma de tejer su futuro.
Guayaquil es prueba de
ello: su origen y fecha fundacional, recientemente aclarada
por la lucidez de cronistas nacidos en su seno, demuestra
a cada paso el espíritu de sus habitantes y forja
un perfil humano único en imperecedero. Redescubrir
y amar a través de lo nuevo aquello que nos constituye,
es el reto permanente de quienes vivimos en esta urbe
huancavilca; en esta ciudad de río y estero,
que en el siglo XXI renace a la esperanza de días
mejores, con remozados colores, con inminente trabajo
y con una dignidad invariable.

INTRODUCTION
In
a compilation such as this, it is easy to take a graphic
tour through Guayaquil, researching what the old an the
new city has to offer, observing what is architecturally
renovated and shows itself in urban equilibrium; thus
obliging us to notice the progressive development and
continuous change and growth, a continuous do an redo.
The difference in this edition is that without being all
inclusive it is essentially photographic. It cannot be
considered a commercial or tourist guide: it is a renovated
project that intends to offer, without regard to genre,
a view of what the city is today.
The
photographic repertoire presented here attempts to observe
Guayaquil from the streets and its sidewalks; as if by
strolling down the streets we observe all without exception….
As far as we can see. We thought of this while taking
some shots as well as during the editing stage of the
compiled material.
As you will see, it is mostly from a pedestrians point
of view: the visitor that promenades, those familiar and
those exploring. Naturally, several aerial shots are necessarily
included in this task.
Let’s
contemplate Guayaquil, the prosperous city of October,
the city that progresses; let us see it in its entirety,
as a coherent whole, comprising certain typical details
of windows and balconies that in their own way are architecturally
in dissonance, but at the same time are in harmony: takes
from and gives to, says and unsays, shines up tarnishes,
besides other curiosities.
All
this from a common pedestrian’s point of view, as
we all are, from Guayaquil or not, but always in this
bastion of independence, that, adjusting to current times,
continues resurging with everyone’s support and
thanks to the rescue, reestablishment and transformation
executed by the City’s Mayor Leon Febres-Cordero
Ribadeneyra and Jaime Nebot Saadi, presenting a new look,
converting it in an unquestionable destination site.
I
wanted to depict this revival and make it known in these
pages,
Santiago
de Guayaquil, an embracing city.

AN EMBRACING CITY
Cities
mirror its people; their most intimate characteristics
intertwine with their history, customs, communications
styles and original way of weaving their future.
Guayaquil
is proof of it: its origin and founding date, recently
clarified by lucid historians born in its womb, demonstrating
at each step the spirit of its inhabitants and forging
a unique and everlasting human profile.
To
rediscover and love through the newest that which constitutes
us is the permanent challenge for those living in Huancavelica’s
land, in this city of rivers and statuaries that in the
XXI century gave birth to hope for better days with rejuvenated
colors, evident work and invariable dignity.
